IELTS Prepositions Guide: Master In, On, At & Collocations
March 9, 2026In the IELTS Writing exam, many candidates believe that longer sentences automatically lead to a higher score. However, the Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA) criteria specifically reward "error-free sentences" and "control of complex structures".
A "run-on" sentence—one that strings together too many ideas without proper punctuation—is a fast track to a Band 6.0 or lower. This lesson will show you how to maintain "Clause Control" to hit that Band 7+ target.
Mastering Clause Control for Band 7+
To achieve a high score, your writing must be easy to read. If an examiner has to read a sentence twice to understand it, your score will drop.
1. The Problem: The "And-Then" Trap
Many candidates use the word "and" to connect too many ideas. This creates a sentence that lacks focus.
-
❌ The Run-on: People can grow and eat healthy fruits and vegetables and can stay healthy by using such places and doing gardening in it followed by organic or compost manure without using pesticides and insecticides which can be a healthier option for them.
-
✔ The Band 9 Fix: People can grow healthy fruits and vegetables in these gardens. By using organic compost instead of chemical pesticides, they can ensure their produce remains a healthy dietary option.
2. The Solution: The "One Sentence, Two Ideas" Rule
A high-scoring essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentences. A good rule of thumb for "Complex" sentences is to limit them to two main ideas connected by a subordinator (like although, because, or which).
