To achieve a high score, your writing must be easy to read. If an examiner has to read a sentence twice to understand it, your score will drop.
1. The Problem: The “And-Then” Trap
Many candidates use the word “and” to connect too many ideas. This creates a sentence that lacks focus.

2. The Solution: The “One Sentence, Two Ideas” Rule
A high-scoring essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentences. A good rule of thumb for “Complex” sentences is to limit them to two main ideas connected by a subordinator (like although, because, or which).

3. How to Break Down a Run-on Sentence
If you find yourself writing a sentence longer than three lines, follow these steps:

Find the “Ands”: Identify where you are just adding more information.

Add a Full Stop: Turn the second “and” into a new sentence starting with a transition word like Furthermore, Additionally, or In addition.

Use Relative Clauses: Use “which” or “who” to add detail without starting a new, messy clause.
